The tenderness and tears of our farewell—
What were they then, of sadness or relief?
We almost hated each other at the last,
And yet, with all our knowledge cruelly gained,
We wept to let each other go,
And felt our suffering and our bond and clung together.
Such tyranny is love's tyranny, that turns
Even our freedom into regret and doom,
And with chains broken can still be holding us!
