Classic Poem

Whenever I visited Hatsuse, I stayed at a certain person's home. One time when I went there after a long absence, the host said (with some sarcasm), " Your house is right here where it's always been! " I broke a spray from a flowering plum that stood nearby and recited this:
As for people — well,
I don't know how they feel,
but in my old home
these flowers still bloom
with the same scent as before
