The Petition of Miss Chloe, to her Absent Lady

Most humbly sheweth,
Such Love and L EARNING as she knoweth,
Accept this S CRIPTION from your Debtor,
When she's grown up, she'll write a better.

I.

D E arest Madam haste away,
If you would your Chloe see;
For I can no longer stay
In this sad Captivity.

II.

Doors tho' lock'd, and Windows bur'd,
Yet some other Way I'll try
To escape my watchful Guard,
Or I'll lay me down and die.

III.

I cannot, will not, longer bear
Cruel Absence! worse than Death,
And your Safety much I fear,
In that sultry City Bath.

VI.

Night, and Day, can testify,
As they constantly return;
'Tis for you, I weep and sigh,
Other Causes I have none.

V.

Madam, I'm but a Beast, 'tis true,
A Creature not extreamly priz'd:
Yet as a Beast that honours you,
Methinks I should not be despis'd.

IV.

Dearest Mistress, ease my Mind,
And to Chloe haste away;
So will you be both just and kind,
And your Petitioner shall pray, &.
