The Plague of Dependence

Courtiers' words let no man mind,
They vary like their fashions;
They bamboozle all mankind
To please their darling passions.
Would you be wise
And endeavour to rise,
You must nothing consult but their pleasure;
That's a sure and only way
All your labour to repay,
With a snack of the publick treasure.

Let the tradesman tend his shop,
And not turn politician;
Let the farmer mind his crop,
Content with his condition.
As for a place,
'Tis a palpable case,
You may dance out your shoes in attendance;
There are candidates enow,
So you'd better go to plough,
Than to wait for a court dependence.
