Poems on the Aki Fields
Our great lord of the eight corners,
the high shining sun prince,
being divine he acts divinely,
leaving the palace that he firmly rules,
and on Mount Hatsuse in Komoriku,
on the mountain road of evergreen trees
he pushes aside both trees and stones
and like a bird crosses the morning hills,
and when the gem-gleaming evening arrives
on the fields of Aki where snow is falling,
he pushes aside both bamboo and pampas grass
and on a grass pillow rests for the night
remembering the past.
Short Poems
On the Aki fields, as the resting travelers
lie down, will they be getting any sleep
while remembering the past?
Though it is but a barren field with shorn grass,
we have come in memory
of our lord who passed away like the autumn leaves.
In the eastern fields the blaze
can be seen rising,
and as we turn back to look the moon has set.
The time is coming
when the sovereign prince who was peer of the sun
arrayed the horses and set out to hunt.
the high shining sun prince,
being divine he acts divinely,
leaving the palace that he firmly rules,
and on Mount Hatsuse in Komoriku,
on the mountain road of evergreen trees
he pushes aside both trees and stones
and like a bird crosses the morning hills,
and when the gem-gleaming evening arrives
on the fields of Aki where snow is falling,
he pushes aside both bamboo and pampas grass
and on a grass pillow rests for the night
remembering the past.
