Upon a mountain of immortal pain
Where the stars gleam across the snow,
I lay in dream, and felt the icy rain
Fall on me dreaming so: below
Hoarse nightbirds cried o' the wing, and in wild train
Swept round about the hill of woe
And when a gray dawn touched my waking brain,
I wondered whether this were so
Indeed: and for cold answer came again
The whirl and play and flow
Of waters bursting from their dire domain
Over the meadows lying low.
