Purananuru - Part 316
He has praised liquor, he has praised liquor, the man asleep
from the stupor of the morning's drunkenness, in an unswept yard
full of straw and he is our king—and we are his bards! Yesterday,
to feed those who came to him as guests, he pawned the sword,
ancient and large, that was hanging at his side. Today I will pledge
my small yal with its black body to back up the truth of my words!
But do not suppose that because of this he will not give gifts!
Go to him, and your woman with a waist as slender as a vine
will put on glowing ornaments. And we will drink from vessels
filled with liquor and feel bliss. Then you will come home
with your mouth red from the drinking, because
an enemy king riding a small-eyed elephant has died, falling before him!
