The Reproof

Cease , cease to wish; 'tis all in vain!
Complaints nor ease nor cure thy Pain.
Had'st thou a faithful Friend,
Would listen to thy Grief,
And cordial Pitty lend,
Oh this thou think'st Relief!
But foolish Maid thy Wish is vain!
Complaints Prolongers are of Pain;
And what in Sighs and Tears would end,
Is aggravated and renew'd by each condoling Friend.

II.

Then impious Maid forbear,
To Heav'n alone complain in Pray'r:
If he whose Word did Thee create,
And wisely pre-ordain'd thy Fate;
Is pleas'd some Evil to prevent,
By this severe, this rigid Government;
How durst thou at thy Lot repine!
Or question Providence divine!
Then cease Complaints thy Station know!
And humble Resignation show.
Thy God will change their Hearts, if he sees fit,
And 'tis thy Duty to submit.
