Sappho to Phaon, With a Present of Flowers

The following Pieces are Fragments of a celebrated Romance; and done into English at the Desire of a Lady of Quality, a great Admirer of French Gallantry.

S APPHO to P HAON ,

With a Present of Flowers .

O H ! View, with an impartial Sense,
These Emblems of wrong'd Innocence:
Their native Red, to Paleness turns,
And Odour's lost, while Sappho mourns.

May these poor Flowers find the Grace
To have on Phaon's Hearth a Place;
That in his softest, tend'rest Hours,
When ravish'd with his new Amours.

These faithful Plants may hap'ly prove,
The Monitors of injur'd Love:
And as you see their Forms decay,
So think my Life consumes away.
