On Seeing the Victoria Regia in Bloom

Thou wondrous Flower! in which, on grander scale
Than in our northern clime, we see displayed
Creative Power, and Skill, that never fail;
By which the world and all therein were made;
With reverence on thy beauty would I gaze,
Inhale thy fragrance, and admire thy Leaf;
Whose wondrous size, and structure claim our praise,
Surpassing our conception and belief.
Yet on our ponds & streams, O Tropic Queen!
The type of thee in stem, and leaf, and flower,
In beauty, and in fragrance too is seen;
Displaying here the same Creative Power,
As where, on Amazon's gigantic stream,
Thou lift'st thy head to greet the morning beam.
