IN CONSEQUENCE OF HER COMPLAINING TO THE AUTHOR, OF THE SCANDAL OF A CENSORIOUS WORLD .

D ELIA , as beautiful as good!
Of manners gaily free;
The world has seldom understood,
Misled by calumny.

Others may wear the veil of art
To shield them from disgrace,
But where there's innocence of heart,
There's frankness in the face.

Then let the tales of scandal die,
Nor hurt fair Delia's rest;
Let mirth still sparkle in her eye,
And peace possess her breast.

If she can charm the good and wise
Why should she ever grieve?
Though malice propagate the lies
That none but fools believe.

Beauty, if like the diamond bright,
Though as the diamond pure;
While it attracts the dazzled sight,
Must envy still endure!
