Sights

Eastern Virginia

As I went down to Millville,
A hill on either han',
I saw two dirt-black nigger boys
Drivin' a load o' san'.

As I went into Millville
Along the gray stone road,
I only saw the miller's man
Storin' a farmer's load.

Oh! Millville's small an' dirty,
An' there one only fin's
Black windowpanes an' low black roofs
An' men with evil min's.

As I came out o' Millville
Along the red clay lane,
I saw a girl with pale gol' hair
Who looked at me again.

As I went up from Millville,
For good two hours' ride,
I saw the glint o' strange gray eyes
An' nothin' else beside.
