Some Things You Cannot Will to Men

You cannot will to men your health,
Your knowledge and your learning
Which some might value more than wealth
For which they may be yearning;
For there are treasures we possess
That we can't will to others,
Although 'twould be so great to bless
With these our friends and brothers.

You cannot will to men your face,
Your character that's shining;
You cannot will to them your grace
That's taken much refining;
Nor can you give to them your peace
You've found in God's salvation,
Along with blessings that increase
That help your land and nation.

There's that which men must earn themselves
Through years of work and study,
Which can't be handed down from shelves,
Nor granted by a buddy;
Therefore the earning must be yours,
Or the gift must be divine;
Then seek the place where heaven pours
Her wealth on humankind.
