Mirth of life's blooming time, sweet beyond seeming,
Lilies that laugh with the dews of the morning,
Grasses that glitter with gifts of the rain,
Roses like kisses, & kisses as fragrant
As roses that cradle June's velvet-barred vagrant,
All these I had of thee when I was glad of thee,
Now thou are gone from me, what shall remain?

Blush of the sunrise & blaze of the sunset,
Stars that are born of the gloom after moonset,
Planets that swim in the sea of the dusk,
Bird-song like laughter, & laughter as thrilling
As all the dawn's rapture of jubilant trilling,
All these I had of thee when I was glad of thee,
Now the fruit's eaten, I hold but the husk.
