Sonnet to Sir Richard M'Guire, Kt.; Who Ascended in a Balloon at Dublin
Intrepid youth, accept the muse's lay,
Bold is her pinion, as thy heart is bold:
Dauntless you soar'd thro' realms of cloudless day,
Saw purer skies, and suns of brighter gold,
And unappall'd view'd ocean's depths unfold.
No more the Tartar Prince shall vaunt his steed,
Thy nobler mounture glory has enroll'd;
A wond'ring nation's plaudit be thy meed,
Let late posterity revere the deed,
Let Erin's hundred bards their harps new string,
From death's damp cave let Ossian's voice be freed:
Let Taliessin from wild Snowdon sing.
The sacred muses love the good and brave,
Give them new bays, and life beyond the grave.
