Trees
How fair's the summer sun that gleams
O'er field and brook, and road and man;
How sweet's the summer wind that streams
Where day gives glowing brows to fan,
And o'er the rose in open bloom,
And o'er the nodding lily's whiteness,
Through the dingle's shadow gloom,
And o'er the open downside's brightness.
As trees in three ways charm the mind,
By hues that bloom or bough may show,
By shape, as comely of its kind,
By lifelike swayings to and fro,
My love is mark'd by threefold praise
For shapeliness all of comely meetness—
Comeliness of gait and ways,
And all her mind's well-worded sweetness.
O'er field and brook, and road and man;
How sweet's the summer wind that streams
Where day gives glowing brows to fan,
And o'er the rose in open bloom,
And o'er the nodding lily's whiteness,
Through the dingle's shadow gloom,
And o'er the open downside's brightness.
As trees in three ways charm the mind,
By hues that bloom or bough may show,
By shape, as comely of its kind,
By lifelike swayings to and fro,
My love is mark'd by threefold praise
For shapeliness all of comely meetness—
Comeliness of gait and ways,
And all her mind's well-worded sweetness.
