Two Pilgrims Hand in Hand

Sonnet to Mr. and Mrs John J. Smith Upon Their Fifty-Fifth
Wedding Anniversary

White-haired, calm-faced, two pilgrims, hand in hand,
Have shared the world's swift joys and bitter tears
With patient, tender, hearts for fifty-five long years,
And passed with fearless feet through Life's strange land.
Their little babes beneath their loving gaze
Have grown into serene maturity,
All lovers of sweet grace and purity,
An ever present joy unto their latter days.

— —

What though some hours were filled with anguish drear!
What though the sun was hid behind the clouds!
What though their dearest dreams were wrapped in shrouds!
It only drew their souls to Him more near,
For it was given to them to understand —
To see God's face and sometimes feel His hand.
