The Victim
Old Envy is a hungry fiend,
Who must be fed forever;
His victim cannot slacken speed, —
He must out-run Endeavor.
Unsatisfied, he scans the road,
And those who pass him by
Just fill his nose and eyes with dust —
He must out-do or die.
Fair Fortune's charms do not enchain —
He runs at Envy's roar,
And spurns the good that God provides, —
He must explore for more.
Who must be fed forever;
His victim cannot slacken speed, —
He must out-run Endeavor.
Unsatisfied, he scans the road,
And those who pass him by
Just fill his nose and eyes with dust —
He must out-do or die.
Fair Fortune's charms do not enchain —
He runs at Envy's roar,
And spurns the good that God provides, —
He must explore for more.
