Voi, che ascoltate in rime sparse il suono
O! ye, into whose kind and gentle ears
My rhymes shall pour the sighs that rent my heart,
In the first error of my youthful years
That kept me from myself so long apart;
The varied style in which the Poet's art
Recounts the lover's hopes, and doubts, and fears,
If you have ever felt the poisoned dart
May move your pity, and perhaps your tears:
Perhaps your scorn—for well I see that long
Unto my fellows I have been a jest,
But if I blush for many an idle song
At least Shame brings Repentance as her guest
Since Reason late reclaimed from years of wrong
Holds Life and all its pleasures dreams at best!
My rhymes shall pour the sighs that rent my heart,
In the first error of my youthful years
That kept me from myself so long apart;
