Turn him over … trimmed like a steak …
There's no danger he'll awake,
And yet it would be worth a laugh
To see him make for the general staff,
Without his head and a hole in his heart.
Hell, but wouldn't the fatheads start,
And fuss, and frown, and bawl him out
For bein' an insubordinate lout!
“Report at once to your company!”
But Jack wouldn't say a word, not he,
Jest stand, and stand, through wet and drouth,
Till death kissed the general on the mouth…
