When stormy day is cold & gray
When stormy day is cold & gray
And rugged winds do tear the clouds
Little blue breaks look out so gay
And laugh along their tattered [?] shrouds.
O then the Earth is clothed with mirth
And sweetly chirp the naked boughs
And the landscape smiles at the fresh Spring birth
For signs like these are signal vows.
Winter in vain may strive to rain
And puff & blow with all his might,
'Tis only to heat & thaw to his wane
And he does but more endear the light.
But the triumph so sweet becomes complete
If wrapt in snows he sleeps secure
When he wakes on a sudden to see at his feet
The snowdrop smiling strong & pure.
O then with a gleam an ancient dream
Of glowing Fields will flush his eyes
And as if he would wilt with the very beam
He rushes headlong to the skies.
And rugged winds do tear the clouds
Little blue breaks look out so gay
And laugh along their tattered [?] shrouds.
O then the Earth is clothed with mirth
