When We That Now Ha' Childern Wer Childern
Ah! where the hedge athirt the hill
Wi' high-grown boughs did grow,
An' ashes' limbs wer wide a-spread,
Wi' up-grown tips, up over head,
And out an' in, wi' broken brink,
The brook did run below.
Out there in wind a-driven dry
Down drove we then did goo,
Where vrost wer still a-ling'ren white,
In sheädes a-screen'd vrom noontide light,
A-heästenen hwome avore the night
Should hide our path vrom view.
As you did skim, wi' litty tips
O' tooes, the ground so fleet,
A-gath'ren in the wind so strong,
Behind your frock a-gone along,
The ruddy leaves, a-lifted up,
Did leäp behind your veet.
But now, ageän, a-treaden trim
Our track, the seäme wold waÿ,
We bwoth do walk wi' slower gaït
On veet a-bearen vull-grown waïght,
An' leäve our litty childern's tooes
To leäp an' run in plaÿ.
Wi' high-grown boughs did grow,
An' ashes' limbs wer wide a-spread,
Wi' up-grown tips, up over head,
And out an' in, wi' broken brink,
The brook did run below.
