You Heard Him Say Lonely, Now

You heard him say lonely, now,
didn't you. Right behind
your back pressed close,
unshaven,
to the mud fence,
you heard him say lonely, now,
didn't you.
There
at the only spot
warm as an animal's belly,
with shadows, unrestrained,
piling, lost,
there between the odd
hatreds, back to back,
there certainly was one
who said lonely,
there certainly was one
who heard it.
Between the mouth that said it
and the ear that heard it,
an unexpected
lid lifts,
and like a joke, hot water
boils over.
Caught off guard, the mud fence, or I,
may jump back,
but there certainly was one
who said lonely
and there certainly was one
who heard it. As long as that's the case,
that pasania tree,
the horse chestnut,
the sunset, and the lake,
all of them are mine.
