Youth

Life in the Book of Lovers bade me look.
Oh, much of heart-break in the pages lay—
Long grief and fierce, fair joy that lasts a day!
All this I read before I closed the book.

“Now art thou warned,” quoth Life, “what loving is.
Filled with this wisdom, whither dost thou go?”
Then I, 'twixt awful tears and laughter, “Lo,
I go to add another page to this!”
