Epigram

Honest Sim and his Wife once to Sea took a Trip,
When a sudden cross Wind overset the light Ship;
Hand in Hand, over Deck, went this Couple together;
Susan sunk like a Stone, Simon swam like a Feather.
Thank my Stars says the Man, (safe escap'd from the Flood)
'Tis a bad Wind, indeed, that blows no Body good.

Perception

Heavily I lay on the ground and watched. — — I have listened anew to the raw hills and plains. The soul that visited every place now slumbers in peace. Yet the body muses just as the field is musing, as the gnarled willows at the rivers muse over the way of the world.
Thou, behind all gates, whom I do not see — hast glitteringly covered Thy abode with veils — I drag Thy load along, and I am astonished at the rebound of Thy footsteps.

When the Snow Was Deep

When the snow was deep,
I sprinkled crumbs for the birds to eat.
They would chirp for food —
The bluebird and sparrows were in pleasant mood.
They would go and come back, but not all would go,
Some would stay and swing to and fro,
On the branches, and eat the crumbs that were left on the snow.

Abraham and Lot

" When tall trees grow in close proximity no bright sunshine reaches them through their boughs; they are in each other's way, are soon crippled, and wither lamentably together.
" This land is rather small to hold us both, there is a water shortage in the well, too near are the thresholds of our doors, too near, too near the walls of our abodes.
" Gradually our peace will vanish, quite frequently our households get into a quarrel; and better off we will be when gone apart.

Calm and Silent

Calm and silent stands the black forest, over it glows a bloody red stripe where the sun has set. Pale with pain a man's figure is extended upon the cross.
And soldiers stand before him cruel, cold, ridiculing and scorning him with hate: " Now, you King and Messiah, do show some miracle, some token of the god that is your aid! "
And He raises His weary eye full of pain and sees — the're casting lots for his garment; through his limbs a fever-frost is running.

A Dearly Beloved

A dearly beloved, a devoted friend, a table, a bed and a home of one's own — this is the grain and this is the barn and this is the heaven, of which I dream.
These are the joys I want to indulge in, be they ever so scanty — for me they suffice; and I shall cut into three shares my morsel, and untouched I shall leave the wine in my jug.

The Lighthouse

What is a lighthouse? Just a solitary light, glowing forth midst the tempestuous sea. Its bright flare reaches far out to the sea, when wind and gale wreck the frail boat.
And ashore come the shipwrecked, joyful that the peril is over; there joy endures for a few days and merriment and shouts of gladness rejoice.
And when the horizon has cleared up, the guests make anew for the sea—and the lighthouse remains on its desert soil, a lonesome and secluded nest.

The First Step Made

The first step made—the road will further lead by itself. So in a blue night I shall go over rose and thorn.
I shall live badly pressed twixt grief and joy; out of the rays in my bosom I shall spin my fame.
A crown I shall put on and shall be a singer——Oh, I feel already drawn by the poet's fate and its misery.

The Holy Two

" Thou child, that wouldst be a woman unto me, thou woman, that wouldst be a child to me, the Holy Spirit resteth on thy brow — yet lo: the world is blind! "
— Thou man, to whom alone I would belong, thou man, thou child — too kind thy word! Not on my brow doth the Holy Spirit rest — in thine eyes is its dwelling place.
" Thou rest, vouchsafed to me by God, thou greater bliss, than e'en I sought, thou happy unrest of my life — behold, who knoweth here thy worth? "

Like Heavy Weight

Like heavy weight upon a tender scale so presses the dream of you upon my heart. Every parting day marks my door afresh with blood and with every morning ray dies the first-born of my desire, and slaves go quite freely about my soul's splendid hall .
Yet I do not beg the pain: " stay away! " It is my father, I — it's child. 'Tis but a little punishment I endure — love is a great sin .
