At the " Ye That Do Truly "
Now are our prayers divided, now
Must you go lonelily, and I;
For penitence shall disallow
Communion and propinquity.
Together we commandments heard,
Paid tithes together and professed:
Now mourns a solitary word
Where solitary deeds transgressed.
Averted be that head of grace,
And turned those melancholy eyes
To weep, within a narrow place
And shadow of iniquities.
Farewell! we may no more be kind,
Nor either ease the other's breath;
Death shall our marriage vows unbind,
Death, and this sharp foretaste of death.
Farewell! before this hour is done
We shall have met or missed, my dear,
In a remoter union,
But now the solitudes are here.
Must you go lonelily, and I;
For penitence shall disallow
Communion and propinquity.
Together we commandments heard,
Paid tithes together and professed:
Now mourns a solitary word
Where solitary deeds transgressed.
Averted be that head of grace,
And turned those melancholy eyes
To weep, within a narrow place
And shadow of iniquities.
Farewell! we may no more be kind,
Nor either ease the other's breath;
Death shall our marriage vows unbind,
Death, and this sharp foretaste of death.
Farewell! before this hour is done
We shall have met or missed, my dear,
In a remoter union,
But now the solitudes are here.
