43

A young man loves a maiden
Who would fain be another's wife;
That other's in love with some other,
And has taken her for life.

The maiden, piqued and angry,
Just weds the first good man
Who happens to come across her.
The youth fares as he can.

It is an ancient story,
Yet one for ever new;
But he to whom it happens,
It cleaves his heart in two.
