The Apology For a Kiss

WITH A HINT TO FEMALE OBSERVERS .

While by my Anna's side entranc'd I stand,
And feel the magic pressure of her hand!
While on her humid eyes I fondly gaze —
Her smile the constant subject of my praise!
If Edgar madly snatches an embrace,
Blame the attractions of that angel face!
But let no mortal envy him the bliss
To give an innocent, though ardent kiss:
Should such exist — old maidhood be her fate,
Her sex's scorn, and worse — the poet's hate!
