Beyond

Beyond my close environment,
To-day's insistent call,
I forward fare, past cave and tent
And hut and castle-wall.

Shall I—an alien, far from home,
Unnaturalized—forget
The quest I make, and aimless roam,
With bounds too near me set?

With skies above me bending down
To meet the mists that soar,
There's music somewhere that must drown
The world's perpetual roar.

To find my Own, across the gray
Old sea of Time I swim,
And clear my eyes from mist and spray
To watch the orient rim.

For often now I see afloat
Some fair, unearthly thing,
And from above a long-drawn note
Has set me wondering!

Beyond my close environment,
To-day's insistent call,
I forward fare, past cave and tent
And hut and castle-wall.

Shall I—an alien, far from home,
Unnaturalized—forget
The quest I make, and aimless roam,
With bounds too near me set?

With skies above me bending down
To meet the mists that soar,
There's music somewhere that must drown
The world's perpetual roar.

To find my Own, across the gray
Old sea of Time I swim,
And clear my eyes from mist and spray
To watch the orient rim.

For often now I see afloat
Some fair, unearthly thing,
And from above a long-drawn note
Has set me wondering!
