The Devil and the Farmer's Wife

There was a man lived under the hill ( whistle )
If he ain't moved away he lives there still.
Sing riteful awful ayful anigo,

This old man went out to his plow,
He hooked up his wife and his old white sow.

One day the Devil came down to the field,
Said, " One of your family I'm going to steal. "

The old man cries out, " Oh I am undone,
For the Devil has come for my oldest son! "

" No, t'aint your son I'm after now,
But that danged old rip that you call your wife! "

He took the old woman right on to his back,
And down into hell he went, snappety crack!

Nine little-devils came, rattling their chains.
She up with a poker and knocked out their brains.

" On now, " said the Devil, " let's h'ist her up higher. "
She up with her foot and kicked nine in the fire.

The odd little devil peeped over the wall,
Saying, " Take her back, daddy, she'll kill us all! "

The Devil he got her right on to his back,
And back to the farmer went, snappety crack!

Says he, " Old lady, did you fare very well? "
Says she, " Old man, I flattened all hell! "

The old man cries out, " I am to be cursed —
She's been down to hell and come back worse! "

And now you see what women can do:
They can lick old men and devils too!
