Classic Poem

Talk of Cambridge no more, nor of Oxford's great name,
Though made sacred by time, and immortal by fame!
A college near London eclipses their light,
Where logic's inverted, and wrong is call'd right!

There — — — young Cromwells may form to his mind,
And teach them to court and betray all mankind;
With the cloak of religion, ambition to veil —
The Devil's saint till he shews us his tail!

There, like toadstools, Republicans hourly spring,
To poison alike Constitution and King;
But their arts hypocritical ne'er will succeed,
For our King we will fight — for our Country we'll bleed!

The young mind's the best soil, the sophists agree,
Where to plant, with success, th' atheistical tree;
Whose fruits are false reason, hypocrisy, plunder,
But the fruit we will blast, and the tree cut asunder.

A Republican's picture is easy to draw,
He can't bear to obey, but will govern the law;
His manners unsocial, his temper unkind,
He's a rebel in conduct, a tyrant in mind.

He's envious of those who have riches or pow'r,
Discontented, malignant, implacable, sour!
Never happy himself, he would wish to destroy
The comfort and blessings which others enjoy:

Our forefathers of old, by his arts were deceiv'd,
Presbyterians they trusted — fanatics believ'd;
But the Throne overturn'd, John Bull found, to his cost,
He had fifty oppressors for one he had lost!

Till at length the whole nation were glad to restore
That good Constitution which bless'd them before;
They no longer endur'd the republican yoke,
But hallow'd the boughs of our fam'd royal oak!

With this Warning before us, we ne'er will expose
Our country again to those terrible woes,
Which French spies and Republicans wish to pour down
On our Protestant Church, Constitution, and Crown:

But their arts we'll expose, and their projects confound,
And the head of the monster keep close to the ground;
While the shores of Old England shall cheerfully ring
With the carol of Freemen — God SAVE S TATE AND K ING !
