We Walk Alone

The wet leaves to the sun-warm porch are clinging;
The radiant morn exults in night's defeat;
The merry birds among the boughs are singing;
And Nature brims with all things fair and sweet —
We walk alone.

The noon-tide heat invites a dream-land wander,
And drowsy peace holds beatific sway;
While sails pass slowly o'er the sky line yonder,
And shining sea-gulls fleck the broad blue bay —
We walk alone.

The glorious day has faded out for ever,
And quiet stars bespread the milky way;
Heart echoes meet and twin souls draw together,
And heaven and earth in one long rapture lay —
We walk alone.

We walk alone in stubborn pride contending
'Gainst better thoughts that fain would lead away;
From lonely exile, not of heaven's sending;
Oh, foolish heart! say that it end today —
We walk alone.
