Song of Lazarus

by

I slept for a week
while the world around me died.
Inside, so did I.

Self-righteous lips pray
for those trapped on sinking ships—
no absolution.

Regardless of cost
good advice springs up like weeds.
No truth is required.

Souls have become cheap
worth less than the USD—
profit margin-less.

We are all equal
laid head to toe in mass graves
united in death.

We could escape this
if we push each other up.
Clenched fists are no help.

A final word’s worth
has the value of hot air.
Together, we win.

Divided we fall...
a long descent to nothing—
blame falling with us.

Thank you, MyNAh_27! Your comment makes my day. Lately all I can seem to write is poetry while my other deadlines pile up. I still need to process, I guess. Wishing you safety and health in abundance!

Thank you! It was a tough one for me because I feel very dramatic right now. I'd like to be yelling angry words from a rooftop somewhere, but no one would listen. Instead, I try to distill the emotions into a poem. I appreciate your compliments! Wishing you health and sanity in abundance :)

Thank you, Regina! Good luck to you as well. This week has flown by in a blur and I am behind in reading all the other work posted. I always seem to be trying to catch up. Wishing you a calm and safe week :)

Awe, thank you! I do love haiku/senryu and that family of forms. I think that's the only form I've written in over the past few weeks. The disciplined limitations help me control the word salad that wants to spit out of me. I'm so excited to see you in the magazine! Linda makes all the decisions with poetry and I was crossing my fingers... but now I see there was no need. Your poetry stands alone, no luck needed.
