The Boyg
Peer Gynt, who knoweth not that craggy height
Haunted by hideous gnome, and witch, and troll,
Foul cacodemon terrors that cajole
The baffled will, deceive both ear and sight,
Voices that echo through the hollow night,
Mislead the faltering footstep from its goal,
Dismay and paralyze the groping soul,
Putting the bold resolve to craven flight?
Who hath not touched, with horrified recoil,
That insubstantial bulk of cold, black Naught,
Heard that unearthly mockery of thought,
And, from despair the future to assoil,
The uttermost of goblin power to know,
Grappled in darkness, for a vanished foe?
Haunted by hideous gnome, and witch, and troll,
Foul cacodemon terrors that cajole
The baffled will, deceive both ear and sight,
Voices that echo through the hollow night,
Mislead the faltering footstep from its goal,
Dismay and paralyze the groping soul,
Putting the bold resolve to craven flight?
Who hath not touched, with horrified recoil,
That insubstantial bulk of cold, black Naught,
Heard that unearthly mockery of thought,
And, from despair the future to assoil,
The uttermost of goblin power to know,
Grappled in darkness, for a vanished foe?
