The First Night

The first night is the worst night
For dramatist and actor,
But the best night (it's the test night)
For the critic
Analytic,
Who regards himself demurely
From artistic motives purely,
As the public's benefactor.

The first night is the worst night,
Yet I strangely like it too,
It's just because (I shun applause)
At curtain ends I greet my friends
And nod to " Who is Who. "
