At the Beloved Temple

I fiddle with a stone beside the stream
Afloat in flowers by the temple walk;
Inside my ears I hear a birdsong’s dream,
A whispered note within the water’s talk.

     “Leaving Beloved” is the literal name of the temple, Yi Ai. In other words, the title is simply Yi Ai Temple. “Time time” means “often” or “constantly.” “Place place” means “everywhere” or “in all respects.” “Spring” here is a water spring or the mouth of a spring. The poet is referring to the sound of water flowing.
     This poem sets a scene of peaceful retreat at a temple and reflects Bai Juyi’s appreciation of nature and clear poetic style. During the Tang Dynasty it was common for poets and scholars to visit temples and nature retreats for spiritual refreshment, seeking inner peace and enlightenment.
