To amend upon those who have since gone ahead,

Is freshly austere in the laps of their stead.

Man’s shackled gains are marked by a toll -

A tariff to motion in part or in whole.

Call for your tender by bicep and brow;

A trail may be forged by ink’s somber vow.

The coffer is bursting; the notes are called in.

Render to Caesar by penny or din.

Engage to the charge, with patience begrime,

For treads to be measured take time over time.

Your sister is dying! Your brother is weak!
For the weary, rise up, for the voiceless, now speak.

The prize doesn’t vary, by shuffle or stride;

Set your course through the night, cast off your pride.

Every father outpaced by his daughter and son

Each pays his vigor, does what must be done.

Scale every molehill and ford every vale,

For progress is progress, whatever the scale.
