State of Grace
To those who say they had a happy childhood
How I’d wish I could believe such nonsense
For some of us it’s like claiming life is so great
So wonderful, that is, filled with joy and fairness
Every single day since the dawn of history.
Oh how I admire the self-satisfied for it takes
Some especial talent to be a believable fool
How I admire them, those true believers
Who can lay claim to hopeless convictions
Adorned with sincere certainty and faith
Last, but not least there’s those who feel saved
Their jumpy little souls already with one foot
Inside of heaven. How sweet the thought
For those smiling angels coming from this abattoir
called earth soaked in blood up to their ankles
