A Carroll in 1648

A Carroll in 1648

Thrice as the antient Roman stories skoar
A lock was set on Janus Temple dore
In Numas Glorious time first it was thus
Next under Consul Titus Manlius
Lastly when Cesar swayed to which increase
Of Happines was born the Prince of Peace
And doe we stil in violence run on
To out-vie Heathens with Confusion?
When heer such were whose morall vertues rayse
The Olive branch above the Conquering Bayes
And in Prophetick mist thus would Implye
What 'tis makes up the tru'st felicety
Peace upon Earth whence Love proceeds and brings
Eternall Glory to the hi'est of Kings
Who to conclude it Acceptable sends
Into the world his sonn to seek his frends
Were lost and out o'th'way; which clue hath in't
The rediest way out of sins Laberinth
And therefore worth remembring what it cost
By any one that would not stil be lost.
