The sudden sun shone through the pane
And lighted both their faces —
A prettier sight just after rain
Ne'er fell in pleasant places:

Two girls. One held a vase of glass,
And one a bulb unsightly,
Ragged and soiled. And this the lass
Upon the vase laid lightly.

" What lovely flowers we 'll have, " said they,
" After it starts a-growing! "
The sun, delighted, slipped away
And down the west went glowing.

The September morning dawned serenely,
Soberly, on my unsuspecting America,
Announcing yet another day of ambitions,
Glorious dreams and hope.Then, suddenly,

Metallic phantoms of apocalyptic terror

With horrendous, nightmarish intent,
Demolishing the twin paragons of high
